Adult Classes

Lux Center for the Arts offers a wide array of classes designed to develop technical skills and creativity while encouraging students to have fun. Instructors and Resident Artists are qualified to teach all ages and skill levels in well-equipped studios.

Independent/Group Study

Private Lessons
Individual assistance is available for students who wish to work one-on-one with an instructor at a time that is convenient for them. Work with a Lux Center instructor in any visual art form. Private lessons are available for youth and adults. Contact our Education Director for pricing.


Build Your Own Class
If you and a group of friends would like to take an art class, but none of our scheduled class times work for you, give our Education Director a call. We will arrange for an instructor in your area of interest to meet with you at dates and times that will accommodate your busy schedule. (At least 4 students needed to build a class.) Open Studios - Punch Card for those approved by a Lux Center instructor
Lux Center studios are open to adult students who have previously taken a class and been authorized by a Lux Center instructor. Ask your instructor or Natalie Nelson.

  • Ceramics : $60 for 8-hour punch card, plus $20 materials/firing fee.
  • Printmaking : $40 for 8-hour punch card and a $10 material fee.
  • Painting/Drawing: $40 for 8-hour punch card. (Students must provide own paint and canvas.)
  • Fibers: $40 for 8-hour punch card. (Students must provide own materials.)
  • Metals studio: $40 for 8-hour punch card, plus $10 materials fee. (Students must provide own metal and other materials as applicable.)

Ceramics

Clay Class Sampler NEW
Ideal for those who’ve never worked with clay and want to experience it! Each week create a different project based on a new ceramic technique. Pottery wheel, extruder, coil, and slab building, glazing and working with slips will all be covered during this exploratory class.

Lamps & Lanterns NEW
Create your own candle lanterns and electric lamps using various handbuilding and surface design techniques. Finished work will be decorated with low fire slip and glazes.

Ceramics Workshops

Japanese Pottery Tools NEW
This two day workshop covers learning about, making and utilizing a variety of Japanese pottery tools. Some of the tools that will be made are the kiri itou (cut off tool), kote (rib), and kanna (trimming tool). Introductions to other tools and usage also included.

Intaglio Carving NEW
You will carve original designs into plaster molds that will then be pressed against clay slabs, for a three-dimensional surface. Using these textured clay slabs, build an assortment of functional ceramics objects.

Printmaking

Screenprinting Made Easy
No need for fancy studio setup, we can show you the basics of screen-printing so you’ll be confident trying it at home. Build and expose screens, explore stencils and learn about registrations to print on t-shirts, pillowcases and more. You must supply your own fabrics to print on.

Printmaking Intro NEW
Learn the history and fundamentals of printmaking in this introductory class. Incorporate drawing, and collage while learning various printing methods such as drypoint, etching, relief and monotype. Inspiration drawn from natural surroundings and projects combined into a 2011 calendar.

Painting & Drawing

Foundations of Drawing NEW
Focus on the fundamentals of drawing and gain knowledge about the basic tools, techniques and language of visual communication. Lessons focus on shading, perspective, proportion and composition while working from still lifes and immediate surroundings.

Painting Workshops

Exploring Chalk Pastels
Chalk pastels are used for vivid colors and textures, to make dynamic paintings. Learn how to work with this versatile medium on paper with instruction in application, blending, using fixatives, alcohol washes and color development.You must supply your own chalks. Materials list will be provided.

Encaustics 3D Techniques NEW
Learn to work "on and off the wall” by applying encaustic wax to multiple surfaces and shapes to create rich painted textures and sculptural forms. Prior experience with encaustic not necessary. Bring your lunch for a day of total immersion into wax build-up processes and innovative work.

Fibers & Textiles

Shibori, Indigo, and More NEW
Learn the traditional Japanese resist technique of Shibori while discovering the beautiful characteristics of indigo dye. Shibori comes from the word shiboru, meaning to press or to twist. Explore the many different ways to manipulate fabric to obtain wonderful textures in various shades of blue. Silk scarves are provided.

Fibers & Textiles Workshops

Nuno Felting NEW
Play with textures and possibilities using this new fiber technique known as nuno felting. Nuno felt is suitable for wearables, interiors or visual arts in all seasons. By contrasting the shrinking of felted wool onto non-shrinking fabrics, a ruching effect of soft texture occurs. You will work with silk and wool roving to produce lightweight beautifully textured scarves in just a few hours.

Metals & Jewelry

Essential Jeweler’s Skills
Working in copper and brass, learn to solder, make jump rings, and draw wire while using saws, pliers, hammers and more to shape wire and cut sheet metal into works of wearable art. Gain an understanding of basic jewelry construction and design considerations. Tools available for check out over the course of the class.

Found Object Jewelry NEW
Bring your own memorabilia, found objects or household treasures to transform into wearable art. Learn ways of attaching these treasures to metals through hot and cold connections. Explore expressive possibilities while learning technical aspects of integrating this limitless range of materials. Basic sawing and soldering experience recommended.

Rings & Things NEW
Explore simple fabricating skills to create split shanks out of wire, solid bands using various combinations; learn about surface texture including hollow form construction to create three-dimensional forms. Basic sawing and soldering experience recommended.

Glass

Sampler Platters NEW
Work with different materials used in glass fusing while learning various techniques to create colorful unique 8”x8” platters. Techniques covered will include; adding texture, torch and candle manipulation, full and contour fuse as well as slump. Class will cover basic glass cutting, terms and more.

Kansas City bus tour
Saturday, October 9

Early bird rate before September 9: $60 for members; $70 non-members
Registration after September 9: $65 for members; $75non-members
The tour will leave LUX Center for the Arts at 7:30am and return at 8:30pm. Participants will receive docent led tours through the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and the Nerman Museum in Overland Park and visit with art collectors Christine and Sandy Kemper at their farm outside of Kansas City.
