Youth & Teen Classes
Lux Center for the Arts offers a wide array of classes designed to develop technical skills and creativity while encouraging students to have fun. Instructors and Resident Artists are qualified to teach all ages and skill levels in well-equipped studios.
Independent/Group Study
Birthday Parties
LUX Center now offers 'artsy' birthday parties! Party pricing includes one hour and a half class with professional art instruction, materials for projects, and time to enjoy cake and presents. Downloadable LUX theme invitations available soon! Hand decorated commemorative plate available at an additional fee. Contact our education director about pricing.
Private Lessons
Individual assistance is available for students who wish to work one-on-one with an instructor at a time that is convenient for them. Work with a Lux Center instructor in any visual art form. Private lessons are available for youth and adults. Contact our Education Director for pricing.
Classes are offered year-round and need-based scholarships are available.

Elementary - Ages 5-9
Mapping the World in Clay
Visit all seven continents as you travel the globe, investigating the clay artifacts of ancient cultures. Make pots, sculptures and figurines in response to your journeys.

Drawing 101
Children learn and apply basic drawing principles with pencil and charcoal on paper. Experiments with blind contour drawing, still life rendering and gestural expression are explored.

Sculpt & Paint After School Club
6-week after school exploration in both 2 and 3 dimensional art making. Classes alternate between working on sculptures in clay & paper mache to working on paintings with acrylic, tempera, and pastels. Lessons on art history and master artists are incorporated.

Knitted Creations
Students work from finger weaving to working with knitting needles to create scarves, coin purses or wallets, and coasters. Yarn, needles and lots of inspiration provided!!

The Art of the Mask
While learning about ritual masks of tribes from around the world, students explore paper machie, clay and cardboard to construct their own. The class culminates with a student-led performance to display their work for family and friends at the last class.

Middle School - Ages 10 -13
Tweens on Wheels
Learn the basics of working on the potter’s wheel. Discover how to make forms such as bowls, mugs and vases. Students are encouraged to explore their own ideas while learning about the exciting possibilities of clay and glaze.

Drawing Portraits
Working with live models, students establish an understanding of the proportions of human faces and learn to render form, volume and texture. Both graphite and charcoal use are explored.

Beaded Jewelry Sampler
Learn the basics of stringing beads to make necklaces, bracelets and more. Work with simple wire wrapping techniques to make earrings and pendants with beads. Different bead weaving techniques are explored. Although materials are provided, students can bring their own beads to individualize projects.

Acrylic Painting Basics
Build upon the fundamentals of drawing and learn to realize ideas with color and acrylic paint. This class teaches students to create realistic translations of the world around them. Lessons focus on technical skills and are based on still life and immediate surroundings.

High School - Ages 13-18
Basic Jewelry Making
Students experience a variety of ways to make wearable art including simple bead stringing and metalsmithing techniques. Learn how to saw sheet metal, solder jump rings, and more with saws, pliers, and hammers. Students gain an understanding of basic jewelry construction and design considerations.

Wheel-thrown Pottery
Students will gain experience and have fun working on the potter’s wheel. New techniques will demonstrated each week, including glazing and finishing methods. All skill levels welcome.

Print/Paint Combo
Projects will explore ways to combine printmaking and painting techniques on wood, canvas and paper. Techniques will include Xerox transfers, monoprinting, relief methods, silk screening in combination with acrylic painting to create layered and dynamic effects.

Youth Camps
Creative Camps
Take advantage of an intense, whirlwind week of creativity! Work with a different instructor every day. Make clay sculptures, prints on paper, acrylic paintings and fanciful fiber creations. Camps coincide with LPS spring break.
