Youth & Teen Classes

Lux Center for the Arts offers a wide array of classes designed to develop technical skills and creativity while encouraging students to have fun. Instructors and Resident Artists are qualified to teach all ages and skill levels in well-equipped studios.

Independent/Group Study

Birthday Parties
LUX Center now offers 'artsy' birthday parties! Party pricing includes one hour and a half class with professional art instruction, materials for projects, and time to enjoy cake and presents. Downloadable LUX theme invitations available soon! Hand decorated commemorative plate available at an additional fee. Contact our education director about pricing.

Private Lessons
Individual assistance is available for students who wish to work one-on-one with an instructor at a time that is convenient for them. Work with a Lux Center instructor in any visual art form. Private lessons are available for youth and adults. Contact our Education Director for pricing.

Elementary - Ages 5-9

Mapping the World in Clay
Visit all seven continents as you travel the globe, investigating the clay artifacts of ancient cultures. Make pots, sculptures and figurines in response to your journeys.

Drawing 101
Children learn and apply basic drawing principles with pencil and charcoal on paper. Experiments with blind contour drawing, still life rendering and gestural expression are explored.

“ISMs” of Art NEW
Discover the web of art movements and ideas. Learn about popular art-“ISMs” from Impressionism, Cubism, Surrealism and more while creating artwork inspired by the artists that founded them.

Knitted Creations
Chidren work with finger knitting, knitting looms and knitting needles to create scarves, coin purses or wallets, and coasters. Yarn, looms, and needles are provided!

Afternoon Art Club
6-week afternoon art exploration in both 2 and 3 dimensional art making. Classes alternate between working on sculptures in clay & paper mache to working on paintings with acrylic, tempera and pastels. Lessons on art history and master artists are incorporated.

Middle School - Ages 10 -13

Tweens on Wheels
Learn the basics of working on the potter’s wheel. Discover how to make forms such as bowls, mugs and vases. Students are encouraged to explore their own ideas while learning about the exciting possibilities of clay and glaze.

Pinch Pots & More NEW
Create pinch pot animals, coil bowls, slab flower pots and more. Each week a different handbuilding technique is explored and new projects created. Finish work using color slips and glazes while experimenting with texture.

Comic Book Illustration
Learn to tell a story in the visual format of a comic book. Students create their own characters and script dialog to compose graphic narratives page by page and panel by panel. Preparation and formatting for publication explored.

Beginning Acrylic Painting
Build upon the fundamentals of drawing and learn to realize your ideas with color and acrylic paint. This class will help hone observation skills and teach students how to create realistic translations of the world around them. All levels are welcome.

High School - Ages 13-18

Urban Stencil Printmaking NEW
FStudents will delve into the historical, social & contemporary implications of street ‘stencil art’. Screenprinting, Positive/negative space, and image layering all explored.

Functional Pottery NEW
Create mugs, dinnerware, pots and more! Students will learn and apply handbuilding and pottery wheel techniques. Learn ways to finish your work with sgraffito, slip trailing and glazing.

Knitting and Felting NEW
Explore the possibilities with yarn and wool roving. Learn to knit and purl for scarves, hats and mittens. Work with wool to create sheets and shapes that will become artwork to display or wear.

Youth Camps

Week-long Art of the Mask Camp NEW
Take advantage of an intense, whirwind week of creativity! While learning about ritual masks from around the world, students explore paper mache and clay to construct their own. Spend time working with other mediums, building an environment and story. The class culminates with a student-led performance to display their work at the last class. Camp coincides with LPS fall break.

Support the LUX at Barnes & Noble
The LUX Center is having a fundraiser at the SouthPointe Barnes and Noble on Thursday, September 2 from 9am-10pm. A portion of the purchases from LUX Center supporters will be donated to the art center to buy supplies and equipment for classrooms and studios. In order for the LUX Center to receive their donation, supporters must present a voucher or mention the LUX Center to the Barnes and Noble cashier before their purchase. Kansas City bus tour
Saturday, October 9

Early bird rate before September 9: $60 for members; $70 non-members
Registration after September 9: $65 for members; $75non-members
The tour will leave LUX Center for the Arts at 7:30am and return at 8:30pm. Participants will receive docent led tours through the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and the Nerman Museum in Overland Park and visit with art collectors Christine and Sandy Kemper at their farm outside of Kansas City.
