Biography

The art work of James Bockelman has been represented by Lo River Arts in Beacon, New York, the Karolyn Sherwood Gallery in Des Moines, Iowa, and is currently carried by the Circuitous Succession Gallery in Memphis, Tennessee and Modern Arts Midtown in Omaha, Nebraska. In addition to exhibiting in numerous group shows throughout the region, Bockelman’s art was featured in solo exhibitions at the Sheldon Memorial Museum of Art in Lincoln, the Museum of Nebraska Art in Kearney, the Norfolk Arts Center, the University of Nebraska – Omaha, and the Kunstoffice in Berlin, Germany. As a recipient of a Nebraska Arts Fellowship Merit Award in 2007 and 2015, Bockelman completed a four–week residency at the Vermont Studio Center in 2014. Recently, his work was accepted into Art Seen: A Juried Exhibition of Artists from Omaha to Lincoln at the Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, the 9th Annual National Juried Exhibition at AXIS Gallery in Sacramento, California, and Bordering at the Ironton Gallery in Denver, Colorado. His art is in the collections of Hastings University, the Museum of Nebraska Art, the Collection of James Hubell of Des Moines, Iowa, the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Kearney and as a promised gift to the Sheldon Memorial Museum of Art. In 2018, Bockelman exhibited new paintings in the following shows, Focus on Abstraction: Potatoes, Prunes and Prisims at Milchhof Gallery Berlin, Germany; Grounded Light a solo exhibition held at Modern Arts Midtown, "Cleft" a collaborative installation at Project Project in Omaha, and at Focal Point Crosstown Concourse and Memphis College of the Arts in Memphis, Tennessee. Bockelman's recent curatorial project Drawing Performance: Abstraction from Berlin and the United States, was a collaboration with seven artists from the Inga Kondeyne Galerie in Berlin and six artists from across the United States, an exhibition that traveled to Concordia University in Seward and the Tugboat Gallery in Lincoln before returning for its final show in Berlin. Born in Hebron, Nebraska, James Bockelman earned the Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln in 1997. Currently he is a professor of art at Concordia University, Nebraska where he teaches painting and serves as curator for the Marxhausen Gallery of Art.​​
