January 2020
Exhibition Description

Featuring Artists Jon Love and Larry Buller
With a sprinkling of text and water features by Michael Ian Larsen

The psychological impact of the output of both Jon Love and Larry Buller relies heavily on the effects of accumulation which, viewed from the lens of an outdated model of psychology, runs parallel to the concepts of neurosis and obsession, themselves categories of illness. This show would seek to maintain that association with a tone balancing delicately between dark and joyous.

This show positions the work of the two artists as visual and emotive counterpoints for one another. Playing off that back and forth motion, the two artists will be divided spatially into two zones on opposite walls of the smaller gallery. The progressive layering of 2 and 3D artworks will culminate in a shrine-like apparatus that will individually pay homage to the Greek mythological figures referenced in the title.

Larry Buller’s work investigates the intersection of queer culture and everyday domestic life, with collections of standard kitchen items such as plates and cups intermingling with dildos and a variety of other sensuous apparati. The surfaces of these objects are then layered excessively with rich glazes and ceramic decals containing imagery that is pleasurably jarring.

Jon Love delves into the fundamental silliness and narcissism at the heart of social media and the internet age with meticulously crafted videos and 2D artworks. One gets the sense that the entirety of his artmaking is done within the blue glow of an open computer screen which, within the context of this show, serves metaphorically as the enchantingly reflective mirror pond in the myth of Narcissus.
