Back-to-School Art Supplies for Low-Income Kids

Hi! My name is Katelyn, I teach art classes for the LUX Center and work in the Education Department.  Last year while teaching throughout Lincoln I found that many of the children didn’t have access to basic art supplies at home. On different occasions, I’ve had students who didn’t want to stop working on their projects. When I told them it was time to put the supplies away and they could finish at home, I was disheartened by how many of them don’t have access to crayons, colored pencils, or markers. This year I’ve decided I’m going to try and change that. I want to give kids the creative outlet they need to foster critical thinking and influence a new generation of artists.

The LUX Center has agreed to implement a new program in our outreach to low-income elementary schools in Lincoln. Each child K-5 in an Art Van deLUX after-school class will receive a bag that contains a box of colored pencils, crayons, a pencil sharpener, and their very own sketchbook. This year the LUX wants to provide these basic supplies for approximately 250 kids. To ensure each child gets these supplies we’ve set a $1000 goal.
