Ceramics Center: Handbuilding Studio

Advanced Wheel throwing is a class designed for those ready to take their pottery to the next level by developing their unique voice in clay. Using a mix of fun exercises, thoughtful assignments, and thorough demonstrations, students will learn to hone their throwing skills and sharpen their critical thinking. Students should already have extensive knowledge of throwing on the pottery wheel. This class will use high fire stoneware and conclude with a cone 10 gas reduction firing. One bag of commercial stoneware, kiln firings, and related glazes are included.

In this intermediate class, we will draw inspiration from both historical and contemporary ceramics to explore the relationship between these elements of the pots we make. You will learn a variety of different hand building techniques for making and adding handles and learn to thank about the rim and foot of your work throught the entire process.

In this intermediate class, participants will explore several ways to decorate clay works using image transfers created with a variety of drawing, painting and printmaking methods. We will use stencils, screen-printing and Gelli Plates to design our one-of-a-kind transfers.

This class will introduce students to the fundamentals of building sculptures out of clay. More advanced students will have time to hone their own style and skills. All clay, glazes, tools, and firing provided. Students also have access to the studio during open hours throughout this six-week class. Please refer to the Open Studio Calendar in the Ceramics Center for the most up to date hours.  This class is for adults 16+.

Note that this class will not meet on June 20 and will meet on Monday, July 1 instead of Thursday, July 4.

Your child can work with their hands and use their imagination while experimenting with clay in this fun camp that will introduce students to basic hand building techniques (slab building, coiling and pinching) they can use for the creation of sculptural and/or functional pottery. More experienced students can work with the instructor to explore their own ideas! Some examples of projects might include pots, boxes, plates or platters. The possibilities are endless! All clay, glazes, tools, and firing provided.

Learn about all the fun things you can make with clay! Students will build and glaze small sculptures and functional pieces. This camp takes place in our Ceramics Center located in the building just west of the LUX parking lot. 

Please wear older clothes and shoes as they may get messy or stained. Clay projects are fired and ready about two weeks after the last class session. Projects left for more than 30 days after the last class session will be discarded.

This camp will introduce basic hand building techniques to create animal and nature inspired artwork out of slabs, coils and pinching. Students will get hands on experience in developing their knowledge of lines, shapes, textures and colors. This camp takes place in our Ceramics Center located in the building just west of the LUX parking lot.
