Exhibition Description

Members of the Lincoln Modern Quilt Group accepted the challenge to use a simple geometric shape in creating a modern quilt based on the Modern Quilt Guild design element definitions. (see below)
Each member was assigned a triangle, circle or rectangle. Using that as their feature shape they created a quilt using solid fabrics.

Key Design Elements

• Expansive Negative Space: Large, open background areas let the main pieced design breathe and showcase intricate quilting.
• Bold Colors and Prints: Bright, saturated solid colors and high-contrast graphic palettes replace muted or dusty traditional tones.
• Alternate Gridwork: Blocks break away from standard, predictable rows and columns to create asymmetrical, offset layouts.
• Improvisational Piecing: Free-form cutting and sewing without strict rules create organic, spontaneous movement.
• Minimalism and Simplicity: Designs use fewer, larger geometric shapes and uncluttered compositions.
• Asymmetry: Focal points sit off-center or vary greatly from side to side.
• Modern Traditionalism: Classic, vintage quilt blocks are updated with fresh scales, colorways, or altered layouts.
