LUX’s outreach program was expanded for 2017/18 to reach 650 children this year, up from 450, with a big increase in support from United Way Lincoln Lancaster County. The Lincoln Community Foundation is another major supporter of the outreach program, with additional funding coming from Allstate Corporate Giving, the Shopko Foundation and the Nebraska Arts Council.

LUX’s outreach program takes high-quality art instruction to after school programs at low-income elementary schools and the Lancaster County Youth Services facility. Studies show that access to art education helps children get better grades, stay in school, and build social skills and self-esteem.

The LUX is Lincoln’s community arts center.  The mission of the LUX Center for the Arts is to provide exceptional art experiences including art classes, artist residence programs, gallery exhibitions and community outreach. The LUX strives to create a welcoming atmosphere for our diverse community regardless of age, skill level or income.

Pictured above, Shopko store #172, located on north 27th St., donated $750 in October to the LUX Center for the ARTS to support the expansion of the LUX Center for the Arts’ Outreach Program. The donation was awarded by the Shopko Foundation, which support “established non-profit organizations with a proven record of success in maintaining solid educational programs.”

“A big thank you to Shopko on North 27th and to all our community partners!” said LUX Associate Director Joe Shaw,  “With their help, our Outreach Program will reach 650 kids this year, two hundred more than last year.”
