Biography

Maddie Hinrichs is a visual artist based in Lincoln, Nebraska, whose work explores the emotional and psychological complexities of domestic spaces through oil painting, embroidery, and projection. She received her MFA from the University at Albany in 2022, where she was awarded the Distinguished MFA Thesis Award, and her BFA from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 2019.

Hinrichs has exhibited nationally in both solo and group exhibitions, including I See Myself in You at Lux Center for the Arts, In Praise of Shadows at Project Project, and the 2025 Miami University Young Painters Competition, where she received second place. Her work has been featured in New American Paintings, The Woven Tale Press, SuboArt Magazine, and CanvasRebel, among others.

She completed a two-year residency at the Lux Center for the Arts (2022–2024), where she is now the Gallery Specialist. She has held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Midland University, and Ashland University. Her professional experience also includes working as a gallery technician at the Sheldon Museum of Art and assisting artist Judith Braun.

Across all her roles, Hinrichs remains committed to investigating the boundaries between illusion and reality, and the ways we construct and respond to personal space.

Artist Statement

My work explores the psychology of interiors through oil paint and embroidery. These mediums find a balance that endures in all my pieces: that of surrealism and realism, textile and paint, dreams, and memory, old and new. Complicated reflections are purposely expansive to create the semblance of deep space that sits on the surface of the work. The spaces are surreal, disparate perspectives forced together around doorways open and closed, offering entrance to new realities. At times the textile can be distinct, at others recede into the colors surrounding it. Detailed and delicate paint is interrupted by thick controlled swathes of impasto and rough textured threads. My work is about self-reflection and perception, challenging and conforming to the illusion of paint.
