Nicholas Wilson’s artwork has brought about many exciting opportunities in his life-----from Curator of Exhibits at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in the 70’s to a 16,250 sq. ft. mural he painted in the 80’s at the Jungle World Exhibit in the Bronx Zoo, New York. At the age of eight Mr. Wilson’s pursuit of being an artist developed from his love of nature. Years of drawing, creating, exploring new mediums and perseverance led to this lifetime profession.
His gouache paintings which depict his unique style of texture & whimsy have been exhibited in numerous galleries: Trailside Gallery (Scottsdale & Jackson Hole); Settler’s West, Tucson; Carson Gallery, Denver, CO; Gallery of the West (Sedona & Jackson Hole); K. Newby Gallery & Sculpture Garden, Tubac (current representation); Diana Madaras Gallery, Tucson (current representation) and are in permanent collections at the Booth Western Art Museum and the Cowboy Hall of Fame. Mr. Wilson has also enjoyed the challenges of monumental bronze sculpture commissions---- “The Wildcat Family”, an 11 ½ ft. sculpture at the University of Arizona, Tucson in 2004 and the “Natural Flow” , a 14ft sculpture at the Booth Western Art Museum, Cartersville, Georgia in 2010. In 2016, Mr. Wilson completed a bronze monument commission for Hamilton County Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial in Noblesville, Indiana. The artist has also enjoyed exhibiting in “Western Visions” exhibit at The National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, WY, September, 2021-22.
In addition to gouache, oils, watercolors and bronze sculpture this artist has been busy creating copperplate etchings and wood engravings. Currently, his wood engravings are being exhibited in the England where he is a member of the Society of Wood Engravers and at the Galleri Heike in Berlin and Denmark. Mr. Wilson’s etchings and wood engravings are in permanent collection at the Smithsonian in D.C. and the Leigh Yawkey Art Museum in Wausau, WI. Mr. Wilson’s etching “Empty Nest” won First Place and Purchase Award at the Modesto Art Museum in 2011.
So, while you explore art in Arizona you may notice Nick Wilson’s Mt. Lion logo he created for the AZ-Sonora Desert Museum in 1992 which is used on stickers seen on car windows, or see the “The Wildcat Family” bronze monument on U of A campus in Tucson.
Among the various media I work in, my favorite, as I grow older, is wood engraving. The graphic expression of subject, presented in black and white parallel lines, dots and dashes, enable me to render my thoughts in precise detail.
