Curator Statement

Artists connected to a geographical area often are immersed in that location and use subjects within their eyesight for their artwork. Others do not limit themselves to those topics and go beyond their locale to find intriguing subjects. They use their imagination or inner life to express emotions, thoughts, and beliefs in their artwork.

This exhibition of artwork is by artists from the Midwest area of the United States. In it there are artists such as Aaron Gunn Pyle, John Stockton de Martelly, Grant Wood, Dwight Kirsch, and Thomas Hart Benton whose pieces epitomize rural regional artwork of the Heartland. Then there are artists whose artwork is derived from thoughts such as Nura (Nura Woodson Ulreich), John H. Page, and Zenaide Luhr. Artwork is necessarily distilled from inner emotions and thoughts along with images of real or imagined material. It is the fundamental wonder of art that it so adeptly expresses the different facets of human experience.

The exhibition of American Heartland Artists may be seen on the second floor in the Lux Print Gallery. The exhibition is curated by Susan Soriente, Curator of the Lux Print Collection.
