Location details and design brief.
The mural will be on the west facing wall of the building and will occupy a section of the wall nearest to South Street. Regulations restrict the final size of the mural. Final design may be a traditional continuous rectangle of space up to approximately 28 feet by 12 feet or might include elements that occur on different sections of the wall, so long as final coverage of the space is not more than 50% of the wall. The finished design will be painted on industrial paper which will then be applied to the surface of the building as a final installation. The mural will be temporary by design.
Applicants are encouraged to reflect on the character of the location. “This mural offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the cultural and artistic landscape of South Branch Library and its surrounding neighborhoods,” said Ryan Wieber, Director of Lincoln City Libraries.
There is no official theme for entries, but we encourage all applicants to consider the unique character of this location in conjunction with the qualities of this neighborhood.
Themes and topics which we would love to see celebrated in this mural could focus on one of the topics below, but are not limited to these topics.
1. Love of and celebration of reading.
2. Country Club and Near South neighborhood connections such as the Lincoln Children's Zoo.
As a public gathering space for people of all ages, submissions should take into consideration appropriate content and iconography.
Artist selection.
We are seeking local artists to enter their designs. Locality will be determined on a case by case basis. Artists who are not residents of the state need not apply.
The artist who is selected will be paid $3000 for their work. Materials will be provided within an agreed upon budget. The LUX Center for the Arts will provide administrative assistance to help support the artists in completion of the mural.
Applications will be accepted until August 28th.
Final selection process is expected to take place during the first week of September. Designs will be reviewed by a number of stakeholders including city officials and representatives from the LUX Center for the Arts and the Country Club Neighborhood Association.
Execution of the mural itself is scheduled for the end of September or no later than the second week of October. Artist must plan to be available during this time to facilitate execution of the chosen design.
