I recently moved to Portugal and my current work is focused on the many abandoned homes seen in meandering walks. For me they are universal statements of emigration and poverty. They are also picturesque: peeling paint, tiles, clay, color, and concrete all in varying degrees of decay set into a landscape of sun amid a mosaic of fields and pattern.
I love the discipline of the reduction relief printmaking process (also known as the “suicide print”) and the surprises which come with each layering of color. The physicality of carving woodblocks, rolling ink, and the repetition of printing become meditative. Each print has from 10 to 25 colors, in opaque and transparent form, and acquires a physicality of layers.
