Babhi
Babhi
Known as one “who makes claw-footed pots,” Babhi (Lisa PytlikZillig) became a LUX fellow in 2022. Appreciating that each artistic and human developmental stage provides access to unique characteristics and expressions which are only accessible during that phase, and not before or after, Babhi allows each work to emerge from the interplay of the materials, evolving skills and techniques, imagination, and social-emotional landscape at the time of its creation. Each piece is a mediation: A story pot develops when a beloved aunt dies midway through the piece, and then a tree vase bursts forth to celebrate her life. Playful forms-a dragon teapot, colorful flower frog, and porcelain bath-materialize in celebration of a first grandchild. Bowls, cups, and flowery posts – some claw-footed and some not – propagate to provide vessels, often as unpredictably shaped and decorated as the lifetimes of sorrow and joy they represent and contain.
