Support our arts classes by volunteering your time to help us prepare art materials and classroom spaces. Duties may include organizing art materials, preparing classrooms for lesson plans, cleaning classrooms after classes, organizing curriculum materials or similar. This support does not include attending or supporting classes as they are running. Note: Regular recurring hours are most helpful. Hours are typically between 10am and 5pm Monday - Friday.

Welcome patrons and answer questions in our galleries and our shop. Volunteers who support the gallery will help maintain our shop area and will be trained to process sales and package sold artworks. Other duties may include helping to update merchandising, light cleaning, inventory control and directing visitors to information about LUX programs. Note: A background check is required because volunteers may be asked to handle money and payment systems. Our galleries are open 10am to 5pm Monday through Saturday. Friday and Saturday help is most useful.

First Friday Open Gallery Support

Our galleries are open from 5pm to 8pm on the First Friday of the month (second Fridays in January and July). These events are a fun way to host the public with snacks and drinks. Volunteers can help us with setup and take-down, replenish snacks, serve drinks and interact with patrons in our gallery spaces to answer their questions. Note: Great for limited availability and commitment once a month.

The LUX hosts free art making events for the public at different times throughout the year. Typically one in January and one in early fall. We also host an art Auction in April. Volunteers will help with setup and take-down, and can be on hand to support art making activities with visitors. Note: Great way to support high-impact events that need a lot of hands.

Event Table Support

At different times the LUX will set up an artmaking activity table with partner organizations to take part in festivals and community projects hosted by other organizations. This is a fun way to promote the LUX with hands-on art making. Table events typically run between 1 and 3 hours. Note: Interested volunteers will be contacted about upcoming dates as they are added to the schedule. Volunteers must arrange their own transportation to and from event.

Facility Maintenance and Upkeep

There is always a need for basic repair projects and upkeep of the grounds around the LUX. Support might include raking leaves, cleaning up property areas, cleaning windows and light repair work around the campus. Note: Flexible schedule, typically within normal operating hours: Monday - Saturday 10am until 5pm. Provides a direct support to keeping our facilities running smooth and looking great.

Volunteer Spotlight - Patti French

Patti volunteers in the LUX gallery shop. You will see her most Saturday mornings.

Why do you volunteer at the LUX?
“I volunteer at the LUX because I love being around art. As someone who doesn’t get to experience art in their everyday work life getting to spend time around the work of others fills me with joy and inspires my own creativity. It is hard for me not to bring another piece of work home with me each time I volunteer. Being able to experience art on my weekends recharges me after a long week."

What is the best part of the LUX?
"The people! The staff, volunteers, fellows and interns, artists, and most of all the patrons and students. I love visiting with each person who comes into the art center. Hearing how people are connected to the LUX, whether a first-time visitor or someone who lives down the street and stops in often, it makes my day to hear about their experiences with the LUX. I particularly enjoy helping people find their finished artwork after they have taken a class. Seeing the excitement, of adults and children alike, as they find their finished pieces is heartwarming."

Patti French is a Medicaid social services lead worker for the State of Nebraska. A lifelong Lincoln resident, she attended Lincoln Public Schools, SCC, and UNL, earning a Bachelor of Science in Kindergarten to Twelfth Grade Art Education. Single mom to a 16-year-old young person, she stays busy with her child and their activities. She looks forward to continuing to take art classes and volunteer at the LUX for years to come.
