About ten years ago I happened upon a sign for a pottery studio sale. That’s when I signed up for my first pottery class, and haven’t stopped making pottery since. I currently have a studio in my home.
Functional pottery has always been appealing to me. As something that is part of our everyday lives, it is used each time we sit down to eat a meal, gather with friends and family, and reach to enjoy our favorite beverages. Handmade pottery is to enjoy a piece of art every time we do these routine things.
For much of my work I use a process called sgraffito, where the surface of the white clay is painted with a black slip, then the slip is scratched away to reveal an image or pattern in black and white contrast. Many of the images on my surfaces are animals, both real and imagined, as they are also such an integral part of our everyday lives.
