Artist Statement

Synthetic Nature is a series of collages and photographs that enquire on catastrophic landscapes where the artificial and natural collide. I am specifically interested in the excess materials used to protect our commodities: plastic bags, containers, and Styrofoam, items whose use is fleeting and inherently disposed of after use. These particular items become relics of my family‚Äôs consumption and a physical residual of a void representing the chaos of contemporary living.

Preoccupation with the representation of consumption drives me to explore the mundane, the unremarkable, non-signifying objects that make up modern-day living that makes a mark but goes unseen. I question their metaphysical makeup, what they symbolize, and their existence beyond my meager utilization.

To document my purchasing through plastic tracing, I produced an abundance of images, collaging them in a somewhat futile attempt to synchronize the unruly. I like to imagine how these useless items meld with the organic, integrating into our ecosystems. The result speaks volumes about the siren-song of throw-away culture, even as we make something lasting, which will never biodegrade. Creating this work served as a reminder to me that this world belongs to synthetic objects. It is not our own.
