Where in the World?
Where in the World?
The exhibition, Where in the World? is a guessing game for the viewer. Can you find all the places portrayed in the prints on a map provided in the gallery? How knowledgeable are you of world geography? While Gladys Lux loved Nebraska prairies, she also enjoyed traveling and seeing the world, which is one reason for the diversity of locations in her collection of prints. Ms. Lux visited some of these places and likely bought a print while there as a souvenir of her travels. Other prints in this exhibition were in her collection as informative examples of an artistic style or technique. Or she possibly purchased a piece because the artist was a uniquely talented and well-known artist that she wanted her University of Wesleyan art students to experience. Her print collecting esthetic created a unique assemblage of artwork and a highly valued educational resource for Lux patrons.
Pieces such as Tehuantepec River by Miguel Covarrubias, Settimello by Andrew Rush, and Scuirr of Eigg by Sir David Cameron will challenge your geographical knowledge. The location portrayed in one print is most likely known to you. It is of a University of Nebraska landmark, Nebraska Hall by Ben Benson. These four and thirteen additional prints in the exhibition will let you visit far away and nearby locations, while stirring your appreciation for the variety of artistic styles employed by the artists and their adept artistic execution.
All pieces in the Where in the World? exhibition are from the Gladys Lux Print Collection and may be seen in the second floor Lux Print Gallery. The exhibition was organized by Susan Soriente, Curator of the Gladys Lux Print Collection.
