Artist Fellowships

Artist Fellowships

The LUX Center for the Arts Fellowship allows artists to volunteer in exchange for space and facility access. We offer two levels of fellowship; Studio Fellow and Junior Fellow. LUX asks for a 6 month commitment to participate in the fellowship. Applicants should have prior experience with ceramics and be able to lift 50lbs. ​​​​​Three references, a background check, and proof of vaccination are required to participate in the fellowship program. Junior Fellowship

This work exchange program is for those who can work independently, intend to be in the studio several times a week, and want to learn more about the ceramic process while being part of a lively clay community. The Junior Fellowship is designed for those who have some clay experiece but want to learn more about the ceramic process by supporting the studio through their labor contributions. Junior Fellows are typically beginning to build their artistic skills and are looking for mentorship from seasoned artists and community members alike. Hours are tracked on a monthly basis to accomodate individual schedules. 

  • Junior Fellow benefits include:

    • Access to the ceramics studios during Open Studio hours
    • Access to studio earthenware and applicable glazes
    • Access to reclaimed cone 10 stoneware for gas kiln firings
    • Access to participate in community cone 10 gas reduction firings
    • Use of the electric kilns to fire their own work
    • Use of basic materials for glaze testing
    • Ability to participate in Bracker's Good Earth Clay orders and take advantage of bulk discounts and shipping
    • Storage shelf in a private closet in the Ceramics Center
    • Junior Fellows receive a 10% off clay, 25-30% off in the LUX shop, and 25% off classes
    • Community gallery exhibition opportunities
    • Opportunities for Paid Teaching
    • Participation in special private events and tours for LUX artists
  • Junior Fellow responsibilities include (duties in order of priority):

    • ​Maintaining a consistent 1.5 hours per week of studio tasks and maintenance
    • Making Studio Earthenware clay (respirator required)
    • Regular cleaning and organization tasks - floors, sinks, wheels, tables, shelves, etc
    • Light yard work such as raking leaves and picking up trash on LUX campus. 
    • Testing and mixing glazes
    • Assisting with kiln loads, unloads, and kiln maintenance

    • Volunteer for one shift for each LUX Community Event (ex: Mayfest, Winterfest, Art Auction, etc) 

    • Other duties as assigned

*Maintaining a positive, community attitude while working in the LUX studios is a must!

Studio Fellowship

This program is for those who can work independently, intend to be in the studio several times a week, and want to actively participate in the ceramic process while being part of a lively clay community. The Studio Fellowship is designed for those with sufficient clay experiece and want to contribute their skills and experience by supporting the studio through their labor. Studio Fellows are typically still building their artistic and technical skills and are looking for mentorship from seasoned artists and community members alike. Hours are tracked on a monthly basis to accomodate individual schedules. 

  • Studio Fellow benefits include:

    • 24/7 Access to the ceramics studios
    • Access to studio earthenware and applicable glazes 
    • Access to reclaimed cone 10 stoneware for gas kiln firings
    • Access to participate in community cone 10 gas reduction firings
    • Use of the electric kilns to fire their own work
    • Use of basic materials for glaze testing
