Frozen in Time
Frozen in Time
Somber icy stillness enhanced by the stark contrast of light and dark imbue winter scenes with dramatic portent. A bright sun can intensify and enliven the scene or bleak gray cloudy skies signify a gloomy mood. Often winter scenes did not just reproduce nature but were done by artists to create a powerful statement regarding human emotions.
Prints capture a moment in time which is doubly exemplified by the subject of winter when nature also is frozen and stilled. Artists such as Asa Cheffetz, Grant Wood, Adolf Dehn, and Samuel Margolies from the exhibition, Frozen in Time, printed precise and meticulous impressions of static snowy winter scenes. They and other artists who created winter images that are Frozen in Time may be seen in the Lux Print Gallery on the 2nd floor. The exhibition was curated by Susan Soriente, Curator of the Gladys Lux Print Collection.
