Experience the Wheel (Level 1)
Experience the Wheel (Level 1) is a quick and dirty class that lets you dip your toe into the basics of wheel-thrown pottery. This three-week ceramics course is designed for people with no background in clay looking to experience the wheel in an easy and no-stress environment. This class is a wonderful way to familiarize yourself with our studios and begin joining our community! Students will use earthenware clay and low-fire glazes. All materials and kiln firings are included. This class is for Adults 16+.
Pre-registration is required. Note that an art class or workshop running is contingent on a minimum of 3 participants enrolled 48 hours prior to the scheduled class/workshop. Cancellation notices will be emailed, and you may respond with an alternate class/workshop choice or request a refund. You are encouraged to invite a friend to ensure that your class/workshop runs!
LUX Wheel Throwing Series
LUX offers the following levels of wheel throwing classes. Students are welcome to repeat classes until they feel confident to move to the next level. Check with Ceramics Center Manager Neil Celani (neil@luxcenter.org) or your instructor if you are unsure about moving to the next level.
Level 1 - Experience the Wheel (3 weeks) - Designed for people with no background in clay looking to experience the wheel in an easy and no-stress environment.
Level 1 - Intro to Wheel Throwing (4 weeks) - An introduction to the fundamentals of the pottery wheel for students who have never experienced it before.
Level 2*- Beginning Wheel Throwing (6 weeks) - A continuation of the fundamentals of wheel throwing. Students will dive a little deeper into the basics of throwing, trimming, and glazing by experimenting with different forms and refining techniques. Pre-requisite: Intro to Wheel Throwing or equivalent experience.
Level 3*- Intermediate Wheel Throwing (6 or 8 weeks) - Includes other Intermediate specialty classes - Students will build skills and fluency with clay by exploring the foundations of the pottery wheel as they gain the skills and confidence to take on more complex forms. Students will learn, in depth, about the process of turning clay into ceramic including drying stages and moisture management, firing processes, decorating techniques, fixing mistakes, planning forward, and more. Prerequisite: Beginning Wheel Throwing or equivalent experience
Level 4* - Advanced Wheel Throwing (6 or 8 weeks) - Includes other Advanced specialty classes - Advanced Wheel throwing is a class designed for those ready to take their pottery to the next level by developing their unique voice in clay. Using a mix of fun exercises, thoughtful assignments, and thorough demonstrations, students will learn to hone their throwing skills and sharpen their critical thinking. Prerequisite: Intermediate Wheel Throwing or equivalent experience
