Cartonería is the art making sculptures with cardboard and is part of Mexico’s rich paper-based craft tradition. Traditionally, cartonería is made with the top layer of corrugated cardboard and wheat paste, like paper mâché, but cardboard provides further stability. The form is dried and then can be painted, decorated or further refined.  In this 6-week class, students will learn the process of harvesting materials, proper mixing recipes, and ratios, building armatures, decorating and surface treatment of Cartonería.

Using copper, brass, and sterling silver, you’ll explore the foundations of metalsmithing in a hands-on, beginner-friendly environment. In this class, you'll learn basic skills including how to saw, file, shape, solder, pierce, texture, and finish your designs. In this introductory metalsmithing workshop, participants will work with brass wire to design and create their own custom stacking rings. You’ll learn foundational metal fabrication techniques, including shaping, soldering, filing, sanding, and adding texture to your pieces. By the end of the session, each participant will leave with a couple of finished pieces, ready to wear and enjoy.  All materials included.  This workshop is open to adults ages 16+

Learn to see light as color rather than simply lighter or darker in this limited palette oil painting workshop. Using only yellows, violets, and titanium white, students will paint from a still life while discovering how warm light, cool shadows, and complementary colors create depth, atmosphere, and vibrant neutral colors. Artist in Residence Alex Renbarger will demonstrate how to mix a full range of values and colors from a surprisingly limited palette while discussing color temperature and expressive lighting throughout the painting process.

Create handmade felt ornaments and bask in the cozy spirit of the winter season while learning a variety of fiber art techniques. Inspired by the instructor’s own tradition of finding or making one new ornament each year with family to add to the tree, this workshop celebrates both creativity and the memories we make together. Students will begin by building ornaments from layered felt before adding dimension with needle felted details, or they may choose to create fully sculptural needle felted ornaments instead.

Meaning “wet-on-wet”, alla prima is a direct painting approach where layers are completed in a single sitting rather than over multiple sessions. Working from a still life, students will be introduced to the foundational ideas of painting big to small, light to dark, and thin to thick while creating a loose, gestural painting from start to finish.

Join us for this fun all ages workshop! You are guided through the basics of creating a fused glass object by our talented teaching artist Samantha Wicht. A paying adult must accompany all children age 11 and under. Teens, age 12-15, do not need a parent/guardian to stay, but they MUST be reachable in case of emergencies. Glass projects will be ready two weeks from the class date. All materials are provided. This workshop is for ages 5+.

Create texture and depth through thick, visible brushstrokes and impasto techniques. You will be introduced to a variety of methods for building texture in your painting, including palette knives, thickening mediums, oil sticks, heavy-bodied acrylics, sgraffito, and piping bags. We will emphasize the palette knife as a tool when creating expressive abstract works and landscapes. Please bring a reference image if desired. No experience necessary, and all materials are provided. This class is for adults ages 16+.
