Learn the major stages of oil painting in this focused, single-session workshop through alla prima painting. Meaning “wet-on-wet”, alla prima is a direct painting approach where layers are completed in a single sitting rather than over multiple sessions. Working from a still life, students will be introduced to the foundational ideas of painting big to small, light to dark, and thin to thick while creating a loose, gestural painting from start to finish.

$50.00

Experiment with a variety of materials and discover how they can work together in one artwork. Over four weeks, students will explore tools such as alcohol-based markers, colored pencils, gouache, watercolor, impasto, Micron pens, and more, learning how each medium behaves on its own and in combination with others.

Explore light and shadow through a focused, single-session painting workshop. A still life with dramatic lighting will be set up as the subject, allowing students to study strong contrasts and bold shapes of light and dark while working on easels with a limited color palette. Participants will create a loose, gestural painting that emphasizes value over detail. Artist in Residence Alex Renbarger will demonstrate the process from a quick, expressive sketch to building up values in paint. Students may work in oil or acrylic and are welcome to bring an object to include in the still life.

Build on your foundational skills and begin developing your own approach to oil painting. Students will work from personal references, combining observation and imagination to create a finished painting while focusing on composition, color relationships, and intentional decision-making. Artist in Residence Alex Renbarger will guide students through refining edges, exploring color temperature and harmony, and using brushwork and surface quality with intention, helping them strengthen their compositions and bring a painting to completion.

Students will begin by creating a master copy of a painting by an artist such as Vincent van Gogh or Claude Monet, allowing them to focus on core skills like color mixing, value, and paint handling without the pressure of designing their own composition.
